This book, consolidating the author's all earlier works on Muslim law, was first published in 2012. In the light of his fresh thinking and experiences of the last over four years he has recast it, simplifying the arrangement of chapters and subjecting each of them to a thorough revision. The book offers in two separate parts a critical study of the Indian legislation on Muslim law and its uncodified principles, explaining the latter with reference to its original sources and indicating its reform in several other countries. With a view to making it a comprehensive sourcebook, extracts from some of the author's other works published elsewhere have been appended in two Supplements.
Tahir Mahmood has spent over half a century in legal studies and research and authored a large number of books, often cited in court judgments. He began his career with teaching law at the Aligarh Muslim University and research at New Delhi's Indian Law Institute. In later years he was Dean of the Delhi University Law Faculty, Chair of the National Commission for Minorities and Member of the Law Commission of India. Since 2003 he is associated with Amity University as Distinguished Jurist Chair, Professor of Eminence and Honorary Chairman, Institute of Advanced Legal Studies.
